The problem of so called ‘internet trolling’ came under the spotlight this week after TV personality Noel Edmonds revealed he had met with the creator of a page targeting him.

The term ‘internet troll’ describes someone who posts comments, videos or starts social networking groups to make provocative and sometimes personal attacks on individuals.

Sharing your location online has become a hot topic after a mobile application was withdrawn by the developers this week following complaints about what it revealed.

Networks such as Foursquare and Facebook can make use of the GPS tracking feature built into most smartphones to allow users to “check-in” which can be especially useful when organising to meet friends or attending busy concerts or conferences.

There are new reports that job hunters could be damaging their chances of being offered a new role because of compromising photos or status updates on social networks.

Recent surveys suggest an increasing number of companies are checking candidate’s online profiles in a bid to filter applications. With as many as 70% of recruiters said to have rejected applications on the basis of information they have found online.

Businesses using a Facebook page to promote themselves online should make sure they are ready for the latest move by the social networking giant.

The site has started introducing its Timeline design for ‘pages’ most commonly used by companies and organisations looking to market themselves. This follows the gradual introduction of the new format for personal pages which began last year and is expected to become the default for all users soon.

From today, if you are using any of the services from Google which include YouTube, Blogger and Gmail you will be subject to a single new privacy policy.

The change aims to make it easier for users with just one single policy covering all of the company’s products. It won’t change the data that can be collected but it will allow advertising on some services to be targeted based on your activity using another service.

Some of your long forgotten social networking past could be about to make a comeback thanks to changes from two of the most popular sites.

Twitter is now offering marketing companies the opportunity to pay for access to up to 2 years of past tweets. Until now it has only been possible to buy access to updates made in the past 30 days. 

Companies who buy the data are likely to be looking to get insights about trends and themes in consumer behaviour. This move highlights the importance of only sharing information that you are happy for others to know.
