One in four of us are apparently spending more time online than we do asleep according to a new survey.

The results show how the internet has become an essential part of daily life. One in three of us apparently check our emails more than six times a day while one in seven check social media accounts just as frequently.

The chances of accidentally breaking the law online could be greater than you might think. According a study we commissioned, only 44% of people could correctly spot illegal activities when given a number of scenarios such as defamation, copyright infringement and hacking.

More than 2,000 people completed nine tests as part of the research, measuring their ability to spot online activities that break the law. For example, they were asked to pick out a libellous tweet about a celebrity, or decide if an incitement of violence on Facebook broke the law.

New research released by internet consultancy firm Envisional has shown that the downloading of illegal films has gone up nearly 30% over the last five years. The figures additionally show that the top five box office movies were illegally downloaded a total of 1.4 million times.

TV shows are also increasingly becoming victims of piracy as the top five most popular shows were downloaded a total of 1.24 million times last year; a huge increase of 33% since 2006.
