Trolls warning roadsign

The problem of so called ‘internet trolling’ came under the spotlight this week after TV personality Noel Edmonds revealed he had met with the creator of a page targeting him.

The term ‘internet troll’ describes someone who posts comments, videos or starts social networking groups to make provocative and sometimes personal attacks on individuals.

According to new figures, more children could be members of the social networking site Facebook than previously thought.

The statistics suggest a million youngsters have signed up to the site, despite restrictions aimed at preventing under 13s from becoming members.

Children are often keen to join social networks to keep in touch with their friends but joining a social network can present risks from online bullying to talking to strangers. For parents it can be a challenge to keep up with the different ways youngsters use the site.

It happens a lot on Facebook and Twitter, but is also seen on forums and on newspaper comment pages.

Facebook marketing director Randi Zuckerberg (sister of the site’s founder Mark) has spoken out this week about online anonymity and its contribution to cyberbullying.

Speaking at a panel discussion on social media, she commented on the trend for online bullies to use nicknames when targeting their victims. "I think people hide behind anonymity and they feel like they can say whatever they want behind closed doors,” she said, suggesting that putting an end to online anonymity could reduce the amount of harassment that takes place on the web.
