There are now less than 40 days before new EU privacy rules designed to give internet users more control over what data websites collect about them come into force in the UK. 

The change means websites will have to adjust the way they use ‘cookies’ - small text files that are stored on the user’s computer used for recognising and tracking visitors. From 26 May sites will have to ask visitors for consent to record user data.

UK shoppers buy more online than other European countries according to the latest study from Ofcom.

The report found 79% of UK internet users had ordered goods or services online in 2010 compared to 27% of Italian consumers. This is the sixth annual study published by the communications watchdog looking at the online habits of 17 countries.

This latest survey shows how important search has become in helping us find our way around the web. This means it is important for a business to consider search engine optimisation as part of their web site strategy to make sure customers can find them online.

Earlier this week, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) – the global organisation responsible for the Internet’s naming system - approved changes to the domain name system that will allow organisations and communities to apply for new domain name endings.

At present there are 22 generic top-level domains (gTLDs), such as .com, .org and .net. Under the new rules, organisations will be able to apply for any top level domain they might want, in any language or script.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has announced that website owners will have an extra year to comply with new rules on cookies that come into force today.

The new EU regulations mean that organisations running websites need to get consent from their visitors before they store cookies – small files used to record their history and preferences on the site – on users’ computers.
