Seventy five percent of consumers are not aware of EU privacy rules designed to give internet users more control over the data websites collect about them according to a new survey. 

According to research by edigitalresearch and IMRG only 16% of those aware of the rules actually understood what they mean.

The Chief Constable of Cumbria Police Stuart Hyde, who leads on e-crime prevention for the Association of Chief Police Officers, said there is a range of legislation available to tackle offensive or malicious communication.

We could be three times more likely to fall victim of identity fraud than burglary according to the Head of Security at Barclaycard who is warning of the risks of cybercrime.

Neira Jones told the 2012 Information Security Conference that that fraud cost the UK economy £73bn last year and that almost £5bn of that was caused by mass marketing scams or ID theft.

The huge rise in smartphone and tablet ownership in the UK has led to a big increase in online shopping according to two new surveys. 

More than half of the UK population now own an app-enabled mobile phone according to the latest research by TNS.

Meanwhile, it seems one in six of us in the UK have used a smartphone to buy something online according to the research from online payments company WorldPay.

There are now less than 40 days before new EU privacy rules designed to give internet users more control over what data websites collect about them come into force in the UK. 

The change means websites will have to adjust the way they use ‘cookies’ - small text files that are stored on the user’s computer used for recognising and tracking visitors. From 26 May sites will have to ask visitors for consent to record user data.

The problem of so called ‘internet trolling’ came under the spotlight this week after TV personality Noel Edmonds revealed he had met with the creator of a page targeting him.

The term ‘internet troll’ describes someone who posts comments, videos or starts social networking groups to make provocative and sometimes personal attacks on individuals.

Many employees are failing to follow basic security measures designed to keep their passwords safe according a new survey. 

The research found that 60 percent of workers questioned said they had written their password down or even shared it with someone else. 

Half of the employees questioned also said they would be willing to give up their work password for less than £5 while a third said they would ask for £50 or more for their Facebook login details.

Recent surveys suggest an increasing number of companies are checking candidate’s online profiles in a bid to filter applications. With as many as 70% of recruiters said to have rejected applications on the basis of information they have found online.

We have recently been made aware of a phone scam targeting domain name registrants. 

In the scam, registrants are contacted by telephone, by someone claiming to have 3rd party ownership of the registrant’s domain. They then make a demand for money or they will sell the domain on.

Please be wary of any unsolicited calls or emails regarding your domain name(s) or web presence.
